Introduction
Hello future green thumbs! Today you start a journey into uncharted territory. We are going to put together a proposal for a community garden to take to the city/town council of your choice. By using the Internet to guide our learning and our quest we will discover what those who came before us have done, what was successful and what did not work as well. Gardening is an ancient art, it has been passed down through the generations to you.
The power to grow your own food is once again becoming necessary. A term you become familiar with during this quest is ‘food security’. Hunger and poverty go hand in hand, a community garden is a simple tool to help provide food security for those in need.
Also the need for gardens in urban areas is increasing, with the growing population and larger carbon footprint cities will need to start to supply more food and cut down on shipping. 'Food desert' is another term that you will become familiar with. Large areas of many urban centers have no where to by fresh food, for many people their only food options are processed or fast food. This is a major reason for the obesity epidemic in North America and Great Britain.
If you have a community garden near you, learn as much as you can from that project before you start yours. I have collected several resources on this site to help you along. This is not the sum of all knowledge, it is only meant to be a starting point for your journey. Remember to keep an open mind, plants can grow anywhere!
